Tropical Storm Preparedness

The following steps for Tropical Storm Preparedness are recommended by NOAA here.

The first step in tropical storm preparedness is awareness. Know if you live in an evacuation area, and be aware of the risks of flooding, storm surges and wind to the structure in which you live. If you do not know what the risks are, contact the National Weather Service to learn more. If you are at risk, pay attention to National Weather Service warnings.

The next step is planning. If you are at risk, have a plan in place should a tropical cyclone occur. This includes having a list of contacts to learn about cyclones as they develop and to provide emergency services. Also consider that you may be evacuated or confined to your home or trapped elsewhere. Plan for how you and your family will contact and find each other and access basic necessities such as warmth, food, and water. Educate yourself on food and safety guidelines and evacuation routes, and read up on what to do in the event of a disaster in your area specifically.

Lastly, planning should include creation of an emergency supply kit. A basic kit should included waterproof coverings, food, water, first aid, and a flashlight with batteries. Red Cross and other first aid and/or emergency organizations have lists online of what such a kit should ideally contain. Consider where a disaster may occur and how you may access the kit. It is a good idea to keep one at home, at work, and in your car if you have one.
